Elasto Proxy is now using automated guillotine cutting to accelerate our fabrication processes. That’s good news for the hard-working employees at our busy Montreal-area manufacturing facility, but it’s even better news for customers who need higher volumes of smooth, clean cuts for extruded rubber products like custom gaskets.
Quality Cuts at Higher Volumes
Elasto Proxy still offers water jet cutting services, of course, and we water jet cut rubber products both at our Montreal-area headquarters and at our branch in Simpsonville, South Carolina, which is just a few hours’ drive from Atlanta, Georgia and Charlotte, North Carolina. Water jet equipment also makes quick, clean cuts, but automated guillotine equipment can cut up to 30 m (98 ft.) per minute.
Advantages of Automated Guillotine Cutting
The advantages of Elasto Proxy’s latest cutting technology include speed, quality, versatility, and cost. Keep reading to learn more and watch the video above to see our automated guillotine machine in action. Then contact us for a quote when you need cut lengths or finished gaskets. Along with gasket cutting, Elasto Proxy offers bonding and taping services for ready-to-install finished gaskets.
Speed
Water jet cutting is fast, but automated guillotine cutting is even faster for higher volumes of quality cuts. As the video above shows, the touchscreen controls are easy-to-use and leverage the latest in human machine interface (HMI) technology. During cutting operations, a coil of rubber is fed into the machine and then automatically cut with a blade that applies equal pressure across the profile.
Quality
Because the pressure across the extruded rubber profile is equal, the cut that’s made is clean and smooth. This is important for cold bonding, a joining process that Elasto Proxy uses to produce finished gaskets with miter corners. Hot splicing, another gasket bonding process that Elasto Proxy offers, also needs clean cuts, but with straight lines instead.
Versatility
Automated guillotine cutting can make straight or angled cuts, but that’s the not the only reason that it’s versatile. From cut lengths as small as 2 inches to much larger lengths, our new machine can handle most type of extrusions, including bulb trim that contains metal reinforcements. Elasto Proxy can also cut extrusions in almost any dimension.
Cost
Water jet cutting is cost-effective because it doesn’t require metal tooling, but there’s still a setup cost to consider. With automated guillotine cutting, the setup cost is built into your project so that the more you cut, the lower the cost. Automated guillotine cutting requires tooling, but Elasto Proxy can quickly and cost-effectively produce it in-house with our Markforged 3D printer.

Along with cold bonding and hot splicing, Elasto Proxy offers a choice of gasket bonding methods, include C-press injection molding for rounded corners. In addition, we can apply pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) tape for peel-and-stick installation or a heat-activated taping system (HATS) for superior strength and environmental resistance.
