Friday, May 16th, 2025, was Bike-to-Work Day, an annual event in North America and Europe that promotes bicycling as a healthy and environmentally-friendly way to commute. In case you missed it, there’s also World Bicycle Day on June 3rd. A second celebration seems only fitting since electric bicycles, or e-bikes, are booming. Between now and 2030, the global market for e-bikes is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of almost 10%.

Environmental Seals for E-Bike Infrastructure

Within an e-bike charging station, there are small gaps between mating surfaces such as panels and doors. Unless these gaps are filled, dust and water can enter the enclosure and put onboard components at risk. Rubber is used for environmental sealing because it can conform to surface irregularities and fill in these small gaps. Plus, unlike metal or hard plastic, rubber is compressible when door or panels are assembled.

There are many types of elastomers, so asking for “black rubber” isn’t enough to get what you need. That’s why when you work with Elasto Proxy, we’ll help you with material selection. We can then fabricate your environmental seals from a weather-resistant elastomer like EPDM, and in the durometer or hardness that you need to support compression. With our water jet cutting capabilities, we specialize in low to medium volumes. We also bond cut lengths into finished gaskets.

Flame Retardant Seals and UL Flame Ratings

Today, there are two main types of electric bicycles: e-bikes that assist the rider’s pedal power (pedal-assist), and e-bikes that add a throttle for moped-like functionality (power-on-demand). Both can be pedaled by the rider, but they’re also equipped with rechargeable batteries. Typically, lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are used because they have a high energy density and a small footprint. Yet Li-ion batteries are susceptible to fires caused by thermal runaway.

If your e-bike charging station requires fire-resistant seals, Elasto Proxy can source UL-rated rubber and fabricate finished gaskets. Underwriters Laboratories (UL), a global safety organization, publishes standards used by North American electrical codes. There are many UL ratings, but UL 94V-0 rubber is used near the socket outlet, the part of the charging station that holds a removable plug. For the e-bike cabinet itself, Elasto Proxy offers UL 94 HB EPDM sponge rubber extrusions.

EMI Shielding for an E-Bike Charging Station Enclosure

Electric bicycles, or e-bikes, may be susceptible to EMI, unwanted noise or interference in an electrical circuit or circuit. Without proper shielding, EMI can disrupt electronics in the e-bike charging station and delay, interrupt or terminate the charging process itself. EMI can also interfere with the accuracy of charging measurements, leading to inaccurate charging times or incomplete charging cycles.

Elasto Proxy fabricates EMI shielding gaskets from electrically conductive silicones, elastomers that are filled with metal or metal-coated particles. Like EPDM, silicones provides excellent environmental sealing. They also resist higher temperatures – and without a loss in mechanical properties. The shielding silicones that Elasto Proxy fabricates include two materials with a UL 94-V0 flame rating.
